          Chapter 12:  Let Downs

Serena raced through the forest, Randy and Joy’s calls to slow up and wait for them fading behind her.  Her only thought was of Joy’s statement at breakfast, ‘Beuford’s got him in jail’.  She had been leaping out of the burrow before her fork had hit the plate.  She remembered Sylvester calling for the constable after her little joke.  Martin was in jail, she reasoned, because of her.  She had to get him out.

Fettish, his “Masked fetishist” disguise in place never saw the reddish brown furred blur that slammed into him, sending his nights haul of panties flying in all directions.  He tumbled to a stop, stars and quarter moons swirling around his head.  Serena rolled to a stop and leapt to her feet.  She immediately took off running again, shouting her apologies over her shoulder to the dazed raccoon.

At length, she paused to catch her breath.  It was then she realized that she had no idea where the jail was located...Or even where in the forest she was.  She held back the tears that suddenly tried to spill from her eyes.  She couldn’t let Martin down.

“Hello,” came a voice from somewhere above her.

She wiped her eyes and looked up amid the branches of the tree she leaned against.  On a low branch she spotted a blue furred bat.

“Oh please,” she asked, her voice filled with the desperation she felt.  “Can you tell me where the jail is?”

“Oh sure,” Bartholomew said brightly.  It’s off that way, you’d have missed it if you’d kept going the way you were.  About a quarter mile away.”

Serena looked down the nearby fork in the trail that the bat had indicated.

“Thank you so much!” Serena said after catching her breath.

She waved at the bat as she bolted off again.

Within minutes she reached the low Brick and mortar building that served as the Rutwell Forest Jailhouse.  She rushed inside, panting breathlessly.

“Well now,” Beuford said, rising from behind his desk.  “Good morning Miss Kitty.”

“Why are you holding Martin?!” Serena demanded.

“Y’all should know,” Beuford said.  “According ta Sylvestah, Y’all was th’ one he accosted.  Leastwise him and the rabbit.”

“But that’s not what happened,” Serena protested.  “I was just playing around...Joking with the boys.  Sylvester just took it the wrong way.”

“Be that as it may,” Beuford drawled.  “The complaint was made...Had ta bring him in.”

“Where is he?”

“Got locked up in the cell block through that door.  Now if y’all wanna see him...”

Serena wasn’t listening.  She hurried to the door and went through.  Martin was in the first of 4 cells.  He sat on the fold down cot looking thoroughly miserable.  Serena rushed up to the bars and called out to him.  Martin’s expression brightened considerably as he jumped up and rushed to her.  They embraced and kissed through the cell bars.

“I was worried about you,” Serena said, holding Martin as close as she could through the bars.  “What happened?”

“After we ran,” Martin explained.  “I looked all over for you.  But then I ran across Sylvester and Beuford....”

“Randy and I kind got lost in the Misty wood,” Serena said quickly.

“The snake identified Martin heath as one of Th.’ two suspects in Th.’ crime he witnessed,” Beuford reminded her from the doorway to the callback.

“Well he got it wrong,” Serena said, frowning at Beuford.

“Did y’all hide behind Sylvester when this one and the rabbit was chasin’ ya?”

“I don’t recall,” Serena lied, then smiling coyly, “I was just playing around.  I didn’t mean any harm.”

“Well...Seein’ as ah haven’t had any trouble outta this one before,” Beuford said thoughtfully.  “Ah reckon Ah might be persuaded ta let ‘im go.  Awful lot o’ paperwork though.”

“I’ll be glad to do it to get him out,” Serena volunteered brightly.  “Where is it and I’ll get started right away.”

Beuford smiled and walked up to her.  He hooked a finger under her chin, rubbing it slightly.

“Official paperwork,” he said.  “Means Ah hafta do it.”

Serena smiled and blushed.

“Oh, I’m sorry.  I didn’t know.  But...could you please let him go?”

“Well, If y’all kin make it worth mah while,” Beuford grinned.  “Ah imagine ah could release ‘im ta your custody.”

“I would like that,” Serena said, her blue eyes sparkling brightly.

“Then let’s discuss it in mah office.”

Serena nodded and then turned to kiss Martin’s forehead.

“I’ll have you out of here in no time,” She promised.

“Y-you don’t have to do this,” Martin said.

“I want to,” she said with a smile.  “I missed you.”

She gave him a kiss on his nose, then followed Beuford into his office.

“I missed you too,” Martin whispered after she had left.

“Well now,” Beuford smiled.  “Why don’t y’all come ovah heah by the desk.”

Serena nodded and did as she was bid, going over the statement she planned to give for Beuford’s paperwork.

“What to you need?”

Beuford slipped an arm around her waist and hugged her close to him.  His touch was surprisingly gentle.

“S-sir?” Serena blinked in surprise.  “What are you doing?”

“Discussing the mink’s release,” Beuford said.

He gently kissed her cheek and muzzle.

“D-d-discussing?” Serena asked, not believing what was happening.

“Yup”, Beuford said, smiling at her with a gentle fondness in his eyes.

“Th-this d-doesn’t seem like discussing,” Serena protested.

“Y’all don’t like it?” Beuford asked, caressing her back gently.

“Y-you just caught me off-guard.”

“Mah humble apologies, Ma’am,” Beuford said before hugging her snugly and kissing her lips.

“Please...Stop,” Serena said, pushing away from the hound dog.  “What does this have to do with getting Martin released?”

“Y’all sayin’ ya don’t want the mink released?” Beuford asked, a confused look on his face as he let her go.

“I do want him released,” Serena said.  “But how is this supposed to get him released?

“Y’all shore don’t act like it,” Beuford said, still looking confused and a little hurt.”

“I’m confused, Serena said.  “I mean...What do I have to do?”

Beuford walked around behind his desk and promptly pulled a four foot tall stack of papers from a two foot deep drawer.

“Ah have ta fill out all these heah forms,” Beuford explained patiently.  “So that you kin go on about y’alls business with yer boyfriend.  Then Ah got ta fill out a report in triplicate for Prez.  Then Ah got ta go stare down Sylvestah ta get ‘im ta drop th’ charges.  Tradition’s always been ta make it worth th’ constable’s time and effort.

“Well, I didn’t know,” Serena said, then as a blush spread across her cheeks.  “And...Martin isn’t my boyfriend...er...not yet.”

“Really?” Beuford asked incredulously.  “Always said that boy was touched in the head.  A fur would hafta be crazy not ta want y’all for a girlfriend.”

“Why’s that?”

“Y’all is, If Ah might observe, A most gorgeous specimen of feline femininity.  Your fur is soft ta th’ touch...And Ah just love that touch of an accent Y’all has.”

Beuford’s voice had become somewhat dreamy as he smiled an looked warmly at Serena, whose blush deepened.

“Yup, I figger that boy is lucky ta have y’all ta help ‘im out.  Even if he is a bit odd.  Did Ah mention that y’all have just th’ purtiest eyes?”

“Thank you,” Serena said innocently.  “What am I supposed to do to make it worth your while?”

“That’s more or less up ta you,” Beuford smiled.  “Of course, I have my own ideas, but it’s really y’alls choice.”

“Oh,” Serena said.  “What’s your idea?”

Beuford smiled warmly and leaned forward on the desk, looking deeply into her eyes.

“Miss Kitty,” he said softly.  “I would consider it a privilege ta mate with you.”

“What?!” Serena blurted out, her eyes going wide in shock.

“In whatever manner would most please y’all,” Beuford finished.  Y’all did ask what my idea was.”

“Oh,” was all Serena could manage to say.

“And what mahgt your idea be?” he asked her with a hopeful look in her eye.

“I don’t know....” Serena said.

Beuford’s hopeful smile dissolved, an upset, hurt look replacing it.  He took the top paper from the pile, sat back in his chair and scooted up to the desk.  His expression became stern as he began filling out the form.

“Come back tamorra afternoon...Late,” he said in a low growly voice.  “Ah should have the paper work done by then.”

Serena blinked in surprise...completely mystified by the constable’s reaction.  She couldn’t believe that the price of Martin’s release was for her to let Beuford mate with her.  The hound grumbled under his breath as he continued filling out forms.  She had to get Martin out of jail.  She took a deep breath, steeling herself, then slowly walked up beside the muttering constable.  She took the pen from his hand and sat up on the desk.  Beuford’s facial expression was still stern, but there was a hurt look in his eyes.  She leaned forward to kiss him, but he placed a finger at her lips.

“Do y’all really want to, Miss Kitty?” he asked, his voice soft and tender, yet somehow sad.  “Because if not, there wouldn’t be any point.”

Again Serena was taken aback.  She wanted to get Martin released.  If this is what she had to do to get him out of jail she would.  A knock on the Jailhouse door interrupted her reply.

“You might want to get that,” She said as she hopped off the desk.

“It’s open!” Beuford called.

The door opened and Randy and Joy stepped into the Jailhouse, panting breathlessly.

“You get him out?” Randy panted.

“I’m working on it,” Serena replied, her eyes going wide as she realized that Randy was also on Beuford’s list.

“Well now,” Beuford grinned.  “Mahgty fortuitous of Y’all ta show up.”

“Uh...why is that?” Randy asked, sweating nervously.

Beuford leapt up from the desk and rushed over to Randy.  The rabbit turned to run, but in his winded condition, he was no match for the hound’s speed.  Beuford snatched him up by the ears.

“Gotcha!” Beuford exclaimed, grinning triumphantly.

“Hey!  What’d I do?” Randy protested.

“Y’all publicly accosted this heah lady,” Beuford said, indicating Serena.

Joy glared at Randy who grinned sheepishly back.  Beuford started back toward the cell block.  Joy ‘hmphed’ then smiled and struck a seductive pose.

“Oh Beuford...” She called sweetly, batting her eyes at the constable.

“Come back tomorrow,” Beuford growled.

The constable marched back to Martin’s cell and tossed Randy in with the Mink.  Joy looked surprised in the extreme.  Serena felt terrible.  Not only was Martin in Jail because of her, now Randy was too.  She marched up to Beuford, her ire more than evident.

“Beuford!” She said angrily.  “Randy didn’t do anything!  I already explained it to you!”

“There’s a complaint out against him that says he did,” Beuford shot back.  “Now if y’all want ‘em, come back tomorrow!”

“Release him!” Serena demanded, crossing her arms and glaring up at the constable.  “Now!”

“Not even if y’all offered ta make it worth mah while,” Beuford said, his voice low and even.

“You’re not going to do the boys any good if you get thrown in jail too,” Joy whispered urgently as she tugged on Serena’s arm.

“I already told you they didn’t do anything,” Serena continued, ignoring Joy.  “And you act as if you haven’t heard a thing!”

“Ah heard,” Beuford spat as he closed the cellblock door and strode over to his desk.  “Y’all ken have ‘em back aftah Ah finish the paperwork...Not before!”

“I was trying to make up for it!” Serena protested angrily.  “So now you’re just pushing me away?  Fine!”

Serena stalked to the Jailhouse door.  She paused there and glared over her shoulder at Beuford, who had gone back to filling out the paperwork.

“Your loss, puppy!” she shot before storming out of the jailhouse.

Joy hopped after Serena, her confusion and curiosity written all over her face.

“Wha’ happened?” She asked as they headed into the forest.  “I’ve never seen Beuford like that.”

“I don’t know,” Serena said with a weary sigh as her anger faded away into dispair.

She slumped up against a tree, her expression one of profound sadness.

“I’m wondering if I did something wrong,” she said.

“You played the game, didn’t you?” Joy asked.

“What game?”

“No one told you about the game?” Joy asked as she lay a comforting hand on Serena’s shoulder.  “Not even Randy or Martin?”

“No,” Serena sighed sadly.  “I feel like I let Martin down.”

“Hmph!” Joy said.  “Males...One track minds.”

Joy became suddenly thoughtful as she looked at Serena.

“I think there’s someplace you need to see,” she said at length.

“Where’s that?” Serena asked unenthusiastically.

“The Rock,” Joy said.

“The Rock?” Serena asked, her feline curiosity piqued.

“It’s in the Misty woods,” Joy explained.  “I stumbled across it when I got lost there.  It’s supposed to be the oldest thing in the forest.”

“What’s it for?”

“It sort of holds Rutwell together and it...It influences things a little.  I spent the night there and Wow, did I have one heck of a dream.”

“About what?”

“About Rutwell.  It gave me a whole new perspective.  You wouldn’t know it now but I used to be the crazy jealous type.”

“Really?”

“Yup.  When I first came to the forest and took up with Randy, it would drive me nuts that he was screwin’ everything in the forest...Well, almost everything.  You should spend the night there.”

“At the rock?”

Joy nodded.

“What about this game you mentioned?”

“Well, Beuford’s really a nice guy, really.  We all bend the occasional rule, but Beuford tends to overlook things if you’re...well...nice to him.  He doesn’t really like to have to lock anyone up.”

“But what did I do wrong?  How am I going to cheer him up from being angry?”

“I don’t know...I’ve never known Beuford to turn down a little fun before.”

“Do you think it was because I wasn’t sure what he meant by discussing Martin’s release and turning him down because I wasn’t sure what was going on?”

“Maybe...Look, you can crash at my place tonight if you want.  It’s probably the safest place in the forest next to Martin’s house.  We’ll get the boys out tomorrow.”

Serena nodded and she and Joy began to walk in the direction of Joy’s burrow.  They hadn’t gone very far when a sudden rush of wind blew past them.  Joy tripped and started to fall.  Serena quickly caught Joy, who looked down at her shorts which were down around her ankles.

“Damn it, Fettish!” Joy shouted.  “That’s the third pair this week!”

Serena looked around and spotted the Raccoon, leaning against a tree, his nose buried in Joys panties, a look of happiness on his face.  Serena smiled and waved at him.  Fettish rushed up to her smiling.

“You were right, Serena,” he said pleasantly.

“About what?” Serena asked.

“You do look better.  I didn’t think it was possible, but you do.”

Joy slapped the Raccoons hands away from where they were busily undoing Serena’s shorts.

“I look better?” Serena asked, confused.

“Than when we met at Martin’s house.”

“He got you too?” Joy snickered.

“I gave him a pair,” Serena admitted.

“A most generous gesture,” Fettish remarked.

“I hope you have a lot of underwear, Serena,” Joy smirked.

“I do.”

“Oh Goodie!” Fettish grinned in delight.

“Oh my,” Joy said, looking suddenly out into the trees.  “Isn’t that Willowmeena?”

Fettish looked around in a panic.

“Where?  Where?!” he asked before he bolted into the trees opposite the direction Joy was looking.

“Works every time,” Joy laughed, holding up the panties Fettish had taken from her.

Serena smiled.

“Just a minute,” Joy said as she quickly stripped off her shorts and put her panties back on.  “Y’know, for the life of me, I can’t figure out how the heck he gets these things off without taking off my pants.”

With Joy’s panties and shorts back in place, the pair set off once more for Joy’s burrow.  They hadn’t gone far when a metallic clang sound rang out from just off the trail.

“What was that?” Serena asked.

“Sounded like Lucky and Mary.”

“Who?”

“Lucky Duck and Mary Mallard,” Joy explained.  “He... Well, it’ll be easier to show you.”

Joy lead Serena off the trail in the direction the sound had come from.  Presently they came to a small clearing.  near the middle of the clearing lay a bluish green feathered duck, apparently unconscious, with a large anvil lying next to him.  Nearby, adjusting the feathers covering her mound, was a blonde, black feathered duck clad in a pink sweater.

“Honestly, Lucky,” the female duck muttered haughtily to her unconscious companion.  “I just don’t know how you keep talking me into this.”

“Hi, Mary,” Joy said as she lead Serena into the clearing.  “Still having trouble getting lucky to finish?”

“Yes,” Mary sighed.  “To think that anyone as perfect as I should have to put up with this sort of thing is just ...Tragic.”

“Mary,” Joy said. “This is Serena.”

“Oh hello,” Mary said, noticing Serena for the first time.  She walked over holding her hand out in a dainty manner.  “I’m Mary Mallard.”

“Hello,” Serena said, Taking the ducks hand.

“You’re new to the forest, aren’t you?”

“That’s right,” Serena said.

“Are you visiting?”

“No, I’m moving in.”

“Where are you building your house?”

“Well, I’m not sure yet,” Serena said, then, sighing sadly.  “I’m staying with Martin...At least I was until Beuford arrested him.”

“Beuford has him in jail?“ Mary asked incredulously.  “Why?”

“Apparently he was given false information.” Serena explained, choking back the tears the threatened to well up in her eyes again.  “We were playing around and Sly took it the wrong way...Stupid Tattle snake....But I think it’s mostly my fault that he ended up there.”

“But why is he still there?” Mary asked, looking Serena up and down.  “I can’t see Beuford turning down a bribe from you....”

“She didn’t know, Mary,” Joy said.

“Know what?” Serena asked.

“The quickest way out of a jam with Beuford,” Mary explained.  “Is to do him a little...You know...Favor.”

“I tried,” Serena said.  “But he refused.”

“I don’t believe it...I mean look at you,” Mary said as she walked around Serena, assessing her body.  “You’re beautiful.  Isn’t she, joy?”

“Yes, but...”

“He couldn’t possibly have refused your offer,” Mary said.  “You did offer to do him a favor, didn’t you?”

“I tried to,” Serena shrugged.  “All I did was try to kiss him and he stopped me after he had sat down to do all that paperwork.”

“He had the paper work out?” Mary asked.  “Oh my...He...He didn’t have to, well, hint at anything, did he?”

“Meaning?”

“Did he bring up the subject, or did you?” Mary asked.  “About the favor, I mean.”

“He did.”

“That explains it,” Mary said authoritatively.  “He thought you were doing it under duress.  Beuford’s a trifle prideful.  That he had to coerce you, or even ask you probably hurt his feelings.”

“Oh,” Serena said, looking sadly down at the ground.  “I didn’t want to hurt his feelings.  I just didn’t know what was going on.  First he said to step into his office to ‘discuss’ Martin’s release...The next thing I knew, he was all over me.  I didn’t know what to think.”

“You’re new here, Serena,” Joy said sympathetically.  “You just didn’t know.  Most of us don’t have a problem with a little favor now and then.  Beuford probably just assumed the same about you.”

“It’s not your fault,” Mary agreed.  “You just didn’t understand.”

“I just hope he forgives me.” Serena said.  “And now thanks to me, Randy’s in the slammer too.”

“I don’t think he’ll hold that against you,” Joy smirked.  “His thing maybe...But not that.  And Beuford said he’d let them out tomorrow, so don’t worry.”

“I guess....” Serena said sadly.

Joy lay a consoling hand on Serena’s shoulder and looked into her eyes with a warm friendly smile.  The smile infected Serena readily as she put her hand over Joy’s.

“There,” Joy said.  “I knew there was a smile in there somewhere.”

The drake on the ground groaned and stirred slightly, causing Serena to jump.

“What happened to him?” Serena asked as she knelt down next to the duck and gently slapped his face to help him wake up.

“What happens every time,” Mary sighed wearily.  “We were having some really great sex and an anvil dropped out of the sky and bopped him on the head.”

The drake looked up through crossed, unfocussed eyes at Serena

“Uhhh...Hello?” Lucky said groggily.

“Oh, the poor guy,” Serena said.

“Heheh...Poor guy...hehehh” Lucky repeated.

“It happens every time we do it.” Mary sighed.

“heheh...Do it...Heheheh.”

“M-Mary?” lucky said, looking up at Serena with unfocussed eyes.

The drake puckered up and laid a big wet kiss on Serena’s lips.  Taken by surprise, Serena reacted instinctively and smacked the duck upside the head.  Lucky’s pupils ricochet across his eyes as he giggled absurdly.

“Heheh...Mary...”

“Hey, you dumb duck,” Mary spat.  “I’m over here!”

Joy stifled a burst of laughter.

A soft whistling sound, growing louder, suddenly filled the clearing.  A shadow fell across Serena and lucky.

“Look out!” Joy shouted.

Serena looked back to Joy in confusion.  Mary took her by the arm and pulled her away from the babbling drake.  A loud, metallic clang sounded.  Serena looked back to Lucky to find a large anvil half buried in the ground where Lucky’s head had been.

“Oh MY! Serena exclaimed.

“Don’t worry,” Mary said.  “Lucky’s pretty resilient.  Just help me get the anvil off his head.”

The three ladies manage to shift the anvil off Lucky.

“I’d better get him home,” Mary said as she picked up the drake’s feet.  “Two anvils is about his limit.  Nice meeting you, Serena.  And don’t worry.  Beuford’s a sweet guy way down deep.”

Serena waved as Mary dragged lucky out of the clearing by his feet.  Joy lead Serena back to the trail.  within a few minutes they had reached their destination.

“Here it is,” Joy announced.  “Burrow sweet burr...”

“SERENA!!” shouted a cute, sweet, all too familiar voice.

“Get me outta here!” Serena pleaded to Joy.  “That sounds like Willomeena!!”

“Quick!” Joy said.  “Into the burrow!”

Serena leapt into Joy’s burrow.  She quickly took cover on the nearby couch and listened intently for any sound of pursuit.  She heard Willomeena rush up to Joy outside the hole.

“Where’s Serena?” The wolverine asked in her sweet and innocent voice.

Joy’s reply turned Serena’s blood to ice.

“Oh, she jumped down in my burrow,” the rabbit replied in a matter of fact tone.

Serena, her heart thudding in her chest and the fur on her rigidly stiff tail poofed out, scrambled for the nearest place to hide, shutting herself in a closet.  She waited anxiously in the small dark space, images of Randy lying completely spent after Willomeena had “played” with him running through her mind.  At length, she heard a thump in the room beyond the door...Someone had jumped down the hole.  She began to sweat.

“It’s Okay, Serena.” Joy’s voice called out.  “You can come out now.  She’s gone.”

Serena peeked cautiously out of the closet.  She saw Joy standing by the couch looking around, and no sign of the Sex crazed Willomeena.  She breathed a sigh of relief.

“Thanks, Joy,” Serena said as she stepped out of the closet.

“Sorry I scared you,” Joy said with a mischievous grin.  “But I knew she wouldn’t believe me.  I Sent her after Sylvester...Told her that he wanted to talk to her about her behavior.”

Serena smiled half heatedly.

“What’s wrong?” Joy asked.

“Nothing,” Serena lied.  “It’s just that...It’s like everyone wants a piece of me.  Is it always this wild here?”

“I wouldn’t live here if it wasn’t,” Joy grinned.  “There’s just something about the place.  It’s like nowhere else I’ve ever been.”

“That’s a fact,” Serena said, her smile brightening.

“Is there something I can get you?” Joy asked.  “You sort of left breakfast a little quickly.”

“No, I’m okay,” Serena said with a sad smile.

Martin’s being in jail had upset he so, she just really didn’t feel like eating.

“You really like Martin, Don’t you?” Joy said, gesturing for Serena to sit on the couch as she sat in a chair to one side of it.

“What gave it away?” Serena asked as she sat down on the couch and smiled knowingly.

“Oh, little things,” Joy smiled.  “Nothing TOO obvious.  He is cute though.  I remember when I taught him how to ‘69’.  When we finished, y’know what he said?”

“What?”

“‘Gee, Miss Bunny, that was neat...But I don’t think I can do it 68 more times.’”

Serena giggled.

“Well, I don’t know,” Serena said with a bemused smile.  “There’s just something about him.  I doubt I’ll ever get the chance to be his...You know...his girlfriend.  He probably likes Monica more than he likes me.  After all... He’s known her longer than he has me.  I don’t have a chance.”

“What makes you say that?”

“I don’t know,” Serena sighed.  “I guess because Monica likes him and he likes Monica.

“Hmmmm, I wish I could help.  I know Martin...If anything, he’s honest.”

Serena nodded and smiled sadly.

“So how do you like Rutwell so far?” Joy asked, changing the topic.  “Aside from the thing with Beuford, of course.”

“I like it,” Serena said.

“Is there anything I can help you with?  Anything I can tell you about?”

“What about this stone you mentioned....”

“The Rock?  What about it?”

“What’s it say?  Didn’t you say it was engraved or something?”

“It’s not marked or anything but you can’t miss it.  I went exploring in the Misty Wood one day and got lost.  Well, actually I was mad at Randy.  I’d caught him screwing the Skunk sisters and just started walking.  I ran across a Pooka in the wood and he lead me...uh...eventually lead me to The Rock.  It was almost like a living thing.  I fell asleep next to it and had the most wonderful dream.”

“What was it about?”

“About the forest.”

“Care to fill me in?”

“I can’t really explain it any better than that.  But I got over being mad at Randy then.  I guess I sort of understand the place now.  It’s really something you need to experience for yourself.

“Oh, well, when Randy was showing me around yesterday, we stumbled into the Misty Wood.”

“Really?” Joy giggled.  “Did you meet any dragons?”

“Yeah, we did.  His name was Horny.  He gave us a ride back to Rutwell.”

“Did he say hello?” Joy asked with a knowing smile.

“He did...but not the way he knows.”

“Why not?  I think it’s a great way to say hello.  I was a little scared at first, but once he got going....”

Joy smiled and wiggled in her seat.

“Well, he scared me too,” Serena giggled.  “You should have seen what Randy did.  He was acting all heroic and such.”

“That’s my Randy,” Joy smiled.  “What did he do?”

“He attacked the dragon to ‘save’ me.  It was so sweet.”

“He attacked a dragon?  He must really like you.”

Serena looked questioningly at Joy.

“What?” Joy asked.

“But...he has you,” Serena said, blushing.

“Oh,” Joy said with a warm smile.  “And your point is?”

“I don’t like to ‘do’ other girl’s guys,” Serena said, feeling a little ashamed at having been with Randy.  “I was a little uncomfortable when he first talked me into it.”

Joy began to chuckle softly.  Serena looked at Joy in confusion, not knowing exactly how to take the bunny’s reaction to her confession.

“That’s it, girl,” Joy said as she got up from her chair and took Serena’s hand.  “You’re coming with me!”

“Wh-where are we going?” Serena asked, a hint of fear in her voice.  “What did I do?”

“We’re going to the Misty Wood,” Joy said as she dragged Serena over under the entrance to her burrow.  “Do you jump?”

“Yeah...but could you go first to make sure it’s clear?” Serena asked.  “And why are we going to the Misty Wood?”

“I’m taking you to The Rock.” Joy announced before leaping up out of the hole.

“Is it safe?” Serena called up.

“Yup.”

Serena leapt out of the burrow.  Joy took her hand and set off at a quick step for the border between Rutwell proper and the Misty Wood.  About an hour later, they reached the beginning’s of the Misty Wood.  Joy looked up at the sky.

“Cool,” she said.  “We should be able to reach The Rock by nightfall.”

Joy marched into the wood, Serena in tow.  Serena felt suddenly apprehensive.  Joy seemed to know where she was going, pausing occasionally to check landmarks.  All the while the sky grew darker and darker.  At length, they came to a fork in the trail.  Down one fork, was a swarm of small lights flitting about in the air.

“What are those?” Serena asked in a hushed tone.

“I don’t, know,” Joy answered.  I haven’t see anything like that before.”

Joy started down the trail toward the lights with Serena following hesitantly.  As they drew nearer, Serena could hear tiny giggling voices amid the swarm of lights.  Suddenly the swarm swept up the trail, engulfing the pair.  One of the lights hovered in front of Serena’s face.  Within the glow, Serena could see a slim mouse, obviously female, with light brown fur, a pair of antennae and a set of rapidly fluttering wings.  Serena could only look in astonishment at the little creature.

The Faerie Mouse giggled and reached out to tickle Serena’s nose.  Serena’s nose wrinkled and she sneezed, causing the little creature to dart back a couple feet. The faerie mouse hovered back in front of Serena’s face again, giggling and smiling.  Suddenly, Joy felt a tugging at her shorts.  She looked down to see a dozen more faeries unfastening and unzipping her shorts.

“Hey!” she shouted, grabbing her shorts and trying to shoo the little creatures away.

She saw that Joy was having a similar problem.  The Faerie in front of her suddenly rushed down chittering at and chasing them off.  The others flew away.  The one faerie flew back up in front of Serena who looked at the smiling, giggling creature unruly.  The faerie mouse giggled and zipped down to snuggle into Serena’s cleavage.

“Hey!” Serena said.

The Faerie Mouse smiled up at Serena and promptly went to sleep.

“Nice ornamentation,” Joy observed as she finished fastening her pants.  “You going to keep it?”
